Conservation and advocacy initiatives we lead to preserve Hong Kong's heritage.
To Be Continued
A documentary co-produced by HKCHF and Walk in Hong Kong, “To Be Continued” chronicles the powerful grassroots effort that saved the iconic State Theatre in North Point from demolition. More than just a historical account, this evocative film offers a deep dive into the fascinating story of Harry Odell, the theatre’s visionary founder and Hong Kong’s first impresario. Odell’s legacy includes bringing legendary musical figures like Xavier Cugat and Isaac Stern to the city. Rich with local history, the documentary masterfully weaves together the narratives of the State Theatre and Harry Odell, celebrating Hong Kong’s dynamic culture and indomitable spirit.
Save Our State
The State Theatre in North Point stands as one of the last remaining treasures from the golden age of Hong Kong’s movie industry. We spearheaded a successful heritage conservation campaign advocating for the preservation of this remarkable building, distinguished by unique architectural elements like the parabola-shaped arches adorning its roof. Our dedicated lobbying efforts were instrumental in the Antiquities Advisory Board’s decision to elevate the theatre’s Historic Building Status from Grade 3 to Grade 1. This project powerfully demonstrates our expertise in both consultancy and advocacy, showcasing our commitment to preserving Hong Kong’s valuable heritage.
Corner tong lau awareness campaign
The distinctive corner tenement houses, known as tong lau, are facing imminent extinction. In 2019, a critical moment arose when one of the last surviving examples, located at 301 and 303 Castle Peak Road in Cheung Sha Wan, was threatened with demolition due to the owner’s redevelopment plans. In response, the Hong Kong Community Heritage Foundation (HKCHF) swiftly organized a series of impactful events, including seminars and walking tours, to significantly raise public awareness regarding the urgent need for conserving these unique tenement houses.
Family History workshops
The Family History workshops were inspired by the moving feedback from audiences of our documentary “To Be Continued | 《尚未完場》”. Many viewers shared their desire to learn how to better tell the stories of their close ones. Recognizing this need, the Hong Kong Community Heritage Foundation developed these workshops to share the skills, techniques, and valuable lessons learned during the production of the documentary. The program focuses on empowering participants to explore, document, and share their own family histories, fostering a grassroot effort in documenting Hong Kong’s history. This creates a deeper connection to their heritage and loved ones.
