Ma Wan Chung: A Journey Through Time
Author Joscelin

Ma Wan Chung Village, located in the western part of Tung Chung in Hong Kong’s New Territories, boasts a history spanning over a thousand years. What sets this village apart is its distinctive economic activities and community culture, which differentiate Ma Wan Chung’s development trajectory and social structure from other villages.
The village’s economy has traditionally centered on fishing and small-scale agricultural commerce, with most residents engaged in marine-related occupations. As urbanisation progressed, Ma Wan Chung’s economy experienced its ups and downs. In earlier days, the village thrived on its flourishing fisheries, and strong social ties among villagers created a tightly knit community network. As one local resident remarked, “People in Ma Wan Chung are very good at socialising with each other.” However, with the development of the new Tung Chung town, fishing resources gradually declined, and villagers’ lifestyles changed accordingly.
Compared to other villages, Ma Wan Chung’s geographical location and cultural background have made it a uniquely vibrant community. Initially, the residents were a mixed-surnamed immigrant population rather than locals, who solidified their importance and economic status in Tung Chung by utilising resources and investing in the annual Hau Wong Temple activities. These temples served not only as religious centres but also as symbols of social standing and wealth. By 1911, as the population of Tung Chung grew to about a thousand, the grandeur of Hau Wong Temple reflected the living standards of the local residents.
Villagers from Ma Wan Chung played a key role as social connectors, maintaining close ties with surrounding villages and often serving as hubs for information exchange. Residents were typically well-informed about the statuses and even gossip of neighbouring villages, demonstrating Ma Wan Chung’s strong socio-economic influence in the community.
With the construction of the pier in the 1960s, Ma Wan Chung gradually supplanted Tung Chung in economic status, becoming the local commercial centre. During this period, many new immigrants leveraged their financial resources and social standing to play important roles in community affairs. The Hau Wong Festival became a means of exhibiting wealth and influence, as many affluent residents sponsored the event to enhance their social status. This economic activity and evolving social structure gave Ma Wan Chung villagers significant influence in the local community.
Looking forward, government plans to redevelop the Ma Wan Chung Pier are expected to bring new development opportunities. The project will not only improve transportation infrastructure but also attract more visitors, further promoting local economic growth. The village’s unique natural environment and cultural heritage provide a solid foundation for its transformation into a tourist destination.
Any local guided tours designed around Ma Wan Chung must emphasise the village’s once-central role as Tung Chung’s commercial hub. This highlights its historical and cultural background and showcases its economic importance. Such tours will allow visitors to gain deeper insights into Ma Wan Chung’s unique social structure and its connection with the surrounding environment.
With its distinctiveness and rich history, Ma Wan Chung stands out among Hong Kong’s villages. Amid ongoing urbanisation and tourism development, it has the potential to become a popular travel destination. Through protecting and developing its cultural resources, Ma Wan Chung can find new economic roles in the future, achieving sustainable development. This will not only invigorate the community’s economy but also foster interactions and collaboration among villagers, further consolidating Ma Wan Chung’s unique status in Hong Kong.
